Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think, especially when we learn it with games!

What is the Simple Present Tense?

The Simple Present Tense is like our everyday superhero of verbs! We use it for two main things:

  1. Things that happen regularly or are habits: Like brushing your teeth every morning, or going to school every weekday.
    • I brush my teeth every morning.
    • She goes to school at 8 AM.
  2. Facts that are always true: Like the sun rising in the east, or birds flying.
    • The sun rises in the east.
    • Birds fly.

The “S” Rule: A Little Trick!

Here’s a little trick for the Simple Present Tense. When we talk about:

  • He
  • She
  • It
  • Or one person/thing (like “the cat,” “my mom,” “John”)

…we usually add an “s” to the verb!

Let’s look at some examples:

  • I play soccer. / He plays soccer.
  • You read books. / She reads books.
  • We eat apples. / It eats grass.

But when we talk about:

  • I
  • You
  • We
  • They
  • Or more than one person/thing (like “the children,” “my parents,” “dogs”)

…we don’t add an “s” to the verb. The verb stays the same!
